Thank You For Our 20 Years Of Publishing Success!

Winnipeg Parent Newsmagazine was born of an idea that parents, caregivers and educators need help to find comprehensive local information on family life and parenting. After much research and no experience in publishing but a passion to succeed, mom of 2 sons, Susan Rykiss bravely set off on an adventure to bring such a publication to our wonderful family-friendly city of Winnipeg. At that time, she was working full time as the assistant Physical Education Director at the YMHA Jewish Community Centre (now the Rady JCC) with a focus on family and children’s programming. She had seen similar free parenting publications in Toronto, Los Angeles and other cities and pitched the idea to local businesses to find advertising support for the idea. It did not take long to find the support she needed to get the first issue to the printer and see her dream come to fruition! “It was very exciting to see the first copies come of the presses and within a week we were receiving great response to the first issue of Winnipeg Parent. The first year we printed 4 issues, the second year 6 issues, and by the fourth year, we ran 8 issues and as they say…the rest is history!” exclaims Rykiss.

Winnipeg Parent has been successful because of the loyalty and dedication of local businesses that saw the value in niche-market advertising and the importance of such a publication to families. Rykiss searched out local professionals to write articles about parenting and family issues and those contributors have been invaluable in making the publication a success. Thank you to Speech and Language Pathologist, Monica Gustafson, Family Psychologist, Dr. Cathy Moser and Pediatrician, Dr. Janet Grabowski! Their knowledge and professional advice has helped many families learn and grow. We have had many local contributors and would like to thank them all.

It is important to have a great team working together to create a great publication. We would like to thank our graphic artist extraordinaire, Ron White who has been creating the layout for many years, our sales team, Karen Jorgenson and Allison Delaurier and our delivery team, Ken Boddis, Kim Nguyen and Rene’s Courier.

Winnipeg Parent would also like to thank our readers for their dedication and support of an idea that we can’t believe has now been 20 years running. In those 20 years, we have seen how hard it is to make a business successful and sadly, we have seen many of our advertisers open and close their doors. We are now seeing an upswing of new family friendly businesses opening and hope they find the great success which we know is possible in our wonderful city.

Winnipeg Parent has also been producing our annual free Family Survival Guide, distributed every December which has become the go-to family information guide in our city that we are so proud of. There is also our Ultimate Family Organizer Calendar, a fall fundraising calendar that has helped schools, daycares, family centres, sports teams and organizations raise those important dollars. We have also hosted an annual Family Fun and Learning Fair for 10 years running, where families can meet local family friendly businesses and organizations face to face and have a great time enjoying the activities and entertainment.

What’s in the future for Winnipeg Parent? We have exciting plans to expand and grow! We are working on getting the publication out to rural areas of Manitoba and are growing our Facebook community. Our Facebook followers receive daily information on events, programs, safety recalls, parenting and videos so please like us on Facebook and let us help you get the information you need!
