Music - Building Blocks for the Brain

Why do some children do better in school than others? Because they make music! Studies have linked active music making with better math and language skills, higher school grades, and improvements in "spatial-temporal reasoning," the foundation of engineering and science.

A Newsweek magazine story, "Your Child's Brain," outlined research done at the University of California at Irvine showing that music education increases a child's learning ability. The bottom line is this: Teach kids music, and they'll have better memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills.

Research shows that music students are better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts. As well, young children with developed rhythm skills perform better academically in early school years.

A 10-year study, tracking over 25,000 students showed that music-making improved test scores. Regardless of socio-economic background, music-making students achieved higher marks in standardized tests than those with no music involvement.

What Should my Child Study and with Who?

Now that you've decided to put your child in music lessons, you have many options. Some depend on the age of your child. Early Childhood Programs are best suited to infants and children under five. They are age-appropriate introductions to music, focusing on rhythm, pitch and movement in a fun environment. The Manitoba Conservatory of Music & Arts (MCMA) offers the Orff-based Music for You & Me, combining singing, dancing, rhythm and acting to connect the child's body and mind in music.

Once your child is five, the world of music opens even more widely. Many parents opt for group lessons for the social component and affordability. Suzuki instruction, offered by the MCMA, is an ideal way to start your child on an instrument. Choose from violin or flute. Our accredited and experienced teachers guide your child along in a positive manner, in small group classes with plenty of individual attention.

If you prefer that your child take individual private lessons, we are pleased to provide free consultations to give you and your child an opportunity to meet and interview prospective teachers. The choice of teacher can make all the difference in quality of instruction and in the progress and success a student achieves and that is why the faculty of the MCMA consists solely of qualified professionals. Possible interview questions may cover qualifications, teaching methods, practice time expectations and opportunities for performing.

We also provide a full complement of theory classes to complete young people's musical education.

You'll find it all at the MCMA!
