Finally-summer has arrived! It took way too long to get here but now that it is here, what are your summer plans? Are you heading to the cottage, going on a road trip or just having a backyard staycation?

How exciting that we will see a return to all our wonderful summer festival and events after two years of the pandemic. First up is the Winnipeg International Childrenís Festival, June 9-12 at the Forks offering great local (our beloved Fred Penner), Canadian and International performers! Then, we have the Red River Exhibition, June 17-26, the Folk Festival at Birdshill Park, July 7-10, and the Fringe Festival with Kids Fringe, July 13-24, and it goes on and on! How lucky are we to live in Manitoba? Every town offers a summer festival or event so check out our Family Fun Calendar and plan your summer vacation right here at home! With the cost of every aspect of family life at itís highest with no sign of relief, you can find lots of free entertainment options at the Forks, the Exchange district, Assiniboine Park, Downtown, on Corydon and throughout the city!

If you are looking for day camp programs to keep your kids busy all summer, check out our listings in this issue and book your kids in now before they are booked up. There are day camp programs running full capacity this summer throughout the city. There are sports camps equestrian camps, theatre, dance, music and art camps too. Whatever your childís interest there is a camp for them!

I want to encourage you to limit your familyís screen time this summerÖkids and parents alike and get outside and play! Bike, rollerblade, swim, play games, walk etc. as a family! Obesity rates in adults and children are rising (the pandemic made it much worse) and it is a combination of lack of movement/physical activity and poor eating habits. Parents need to be good role models and teach healthy eating habits and active lifestyles! Inactive and overweight children are at risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. Ask yourselfÖ..am I doing all I can to encourage a healthy lifestyle for my family. If the answer is noÖdo something about it! Letís get outside and play!

This issue is packed with information on summer family fun. Check out great articles by our regular columnists, Dr. Jay Greenfeld and Maureen Penko, tips on summer camping, grocery store savings hacks, Fatherís Day fun and much more!

Have a safe and happy June & July!

Susan
