May is finally here and it has been a long, long, long cold and snowy winter. Let's hope the slow thaw and warm up means that once the heat arrives, it will stay all summer long. I am hoping for a long hot summer just like last year! It is great to finally see families outside walking, biking, rollerblading and playing in the parks. It is time to turn off technology and get outside with your kids every day. You are your children's role model so if you are sitting inside all evening, you should ask yourself "what kind of example am I setting for my kids?" Childhood obesity is epidemic and there is no question that the parents are to blame. You are in control of what your children eat and what activities they participate in when they are young. You can set the example to live a healthy lifestyle and eat healthy balanced meals.
This issue features our annual Mothers Day/Baby on Board section for new and expectant parents. Congratulations to our winner of the Baby on the Cover Contest Nora Hiebert. We had so many entries but I am sure you will agree that our winner is absolutely adorable! When a new baby comes home, it is one of the most exciting life altering experiences. Raising children is the toughest and most rewarding task you will have in your lifetime. If you find as a new parent you need help in any way, with colic, breastfeeding, depression etc... there are many local organizations who can help. Don't wait if you are feeling challenged, exhausted or frustrated. Check out our Baby on Board Resources Directory, visit our local Family Centre or call your Pediatrician.
This issue also features our Summer Fun section and Summer Camps Part 2. Check out the many day camp opportunities and book your children into camps now to make sure you get the weeks you want. This is also the start of festival season! Check out the Science Rendezvous at U of M on Saturday May 11th. Then it's the Winnipeg International Children's Festival, June 9-12 at the Forks.
I look forward to meeting you at the Family Fun Learning Fair! Have a warm and wonderful May!
