As I write this, the last leaves are hanging on to their branches, not wanting to give in to the cool autumn wind that is trying it's hardest to strip the trees bare. It is a wet, gray day that makes everyone I talk to tired and cranky. I think that humans are partially solar powered and if we don't get our share of sunshine, we feel drained and sleepy. I hope the sun comes out tomorrow like the weather channel promises.

I can't believe how quickly November has arrived. October has been a beautiful month albeit a little wet. At least the temperatures have been warm and we can continue to enjoy being outdoors walking, biking, rollerblading and enjoying the incredible palate of colors this time of year brings. It is worth it to slow down a little and enjoy the beauty of the season before it gives way to the whiteness of winter. Get the kids outside and enjoy the piles of leaves!

Are you ready for winter? Have you organized the boots, mitts, hats and coats? Does everything still fit? Make sure you are prepared for the inevitable so there is no last minute panic. Please consider donating outgrown clothing, boots and shoes to the many organizations that help less fortunate families dress for winter. There are so many children that go to school in winter without proper boots and clothing. Canadian Footwear has taken the initiative to start a footwear drive for families who do not have proper footwear. Check out the article in this issue for details.

Our November issue features a section all about Pets. It is a great time to bring a pet into your family's life if you are prepared for the commitment it takes. It is important to do the research when considering a pet as you will find when you read the article on choosing a pet in this issue. The new Humane Society building is now open and it is a great place to find your new family member or to research the idea of having a family pet. In this issue, you will read about the incredible Golden Retriever named Keeno, who has changed the lives of Autistic twins Quinn and Brody and their family. This article is a follow up to the article one year ago when the Thomson family first received Keeno, a service dog. Pets can change and enhance our lives but this is a story that will truly touch your heart and demonstrate the value of how a special pet can change the lives of special kids.

I hope you have a wonderful November and lets hope for warm winds and a gentle progression to the short, cold days of a Winnipeg Winter.

Susan
