The Importance of Sleep and How Sleep Training can Help

By Dayna Zaik

I imagine we all know that sleep is important, but do you know just how important it is? Especially for your children? Are you aware of what exactly happens while your children sleep? Let me give you a short understanding. While your child sleeps, their brains are doing so much growing, developing, sorting and storing knowledge, solving problems and resting for the next days events. Their body is also growing, and their immune system is repairing and strengthening. So how much sleep does a child need on average? A newborn needs the most sleep around 15-18 hours in a 24-hour period. 6 months to 3 years old need about 12-15 hours in 24 hours. 5 to 12 years old need 9-12 hours and 13 years and up need 8-10 hours of sleep. So how can sleep training help? From an early age we can set the groundwork for a healthy sleep foundation by knowing what age-appropriate wake windows are and creating a relaxing bedtime routine with an age-appropriate bedtime. Once your baby is 4-6 months, working on independent sleep skills such as, self soothing, is going to be the biggest key to a goodnights sleep. When your child is able to put themselves to sleep, they will be able to put themselves back to sleep when they wake in the night. Making sure you're optimizing your child's sleep from early on will not only help them grow and develop but also carry on with them into childhood and adult life. It gives them the chance to function healthy on a daily basis and learn with more ease in their school years. You're not just giving them sleep, you're giving them opportunities. It's never too late to sleep train and set a healthy sleep foundation.
