Magic Flute: a Family Opera

Rehearsals are just wrapping up for The Little Opera Company's production of the John Greer adaptation of Mozart's The Magic Flute (May 9/10 in the Salle Martial Caron Theatre in St. Boniface College). The production promises to be very entertaining with fabulous singing from some of Winnipeg's most talented and emerging singing artists.

The Magic Flute takes place in ancient Egypt, where Princess Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, has been kidnapped by Sarastro, High Priest of Isis. The story's heroes are Tamino, a prince and Papageno, a bird catcher, who set out to rescue Princess Pamina. To protect him on his search, Tamino is given a magic flute. Papageno is given a set of magical bells to ring if danger threatens them. Tamino and Papageno are faced with many dangers on their journey to the save the princess. As they encounter each situation, they use their magical instruments to ward off danger. Their music charms even the most ferocious animals of the forest and ensures that they will make their way safely through every trial.

Princess Pamina will be played by Janine Brèmault who has just finished singing the role of Elsie in the G & S production of Yeoman of the Guard and Tamino will be sung by LOC newcomer DeLayne Toews. The very talented Manitoba baritone, Scott Braun will be singing Papageno.

The Little Opera Company has been producing contemporary chamber opera that represents a distinct and refreshing alternative to "grand" opera since 1995. They use local artists for all vocal and instrumental roles, giving local musicians an opportunity to hone their art with like-minded professionals in the context of live performances. By presenting novel and challenging operas, the LOC is instrumental in providing a venue for tomorrow's opera stars to round out their performing experience.

Tickets are available from McNally Robinson Booksellers or from the LOC's website*. Call 452-1017 for more information. (* Will open in a new window.)
