May is such an exciting time of year! The streets are clean, everything is turning green, flowers are starting to bloom and everyone seems so upbeat. Take a walk in the early evening and you will see children playing soccer and baseball at your local park or school grounds while their parents sit in lawn chairs, cheering them on. It is the rituals of spring in Winnipeg that make spring so special.
May is a great time to take stock of your family's habits and try to change the unhealthy ones. Get the kids outside to play at the park, walk, bike or roller blade. Put a limit on video games, computer and television time. Do this in a positive way and turn that individual time into family time. How much time
do you actually have together as a family? In this busy world..family time can be limited. Make an effort to make dinner together and eat together. If you eat too much fast food, try to have a few family dinner nights at home. Kids love to help make dinner and even the youngest kids are eager to be involved.
May is also a great time to help improve the state or our world. Do you recycle? Think about what you can do as a family to help make the earth a healthier place. Ask your children about their thoughts on the topic. You will be surprised at how much they know. Stop using plastic bags and take tote bags to the grocery store. Make sure you recycle as many bottles, papers and plastic containers as you can. Shut off the lights and electronics when you leave a room. Don't drive somewhere if you can walk. If every family makes these simple changes, it will do a world of good!
In this issue, we feature our Baby on Board section. Bringing a child into this world is the most amazing, challenging and life-changing experiences that parents will ever have. It will be a roller coaster ride filled with ups and downs. Most of us are not fully prepared for the challenge of raising a child but there is a lot of help out there if needed. The most important advice I have for new parents is: "Don't be afraid to ask for help". Help can be found at Family Centres, doctors, public health nurses, books, friends and family.
Also in this issue we highlight Summer Camps. Schools will be closed for the summer very soon and if you want to send your child to camp, you should be booking them in now. Check out the wide variety of camps in this issue.there is
a camp for every interest!
Get outside and enjoy a warm and wonderful May!
