KUNG FOOD is here! .... A Food Allergy App for Children and Teens Developed by Local Health Care Experts

Submitted by the Children's Allergy and Asthma Education Centre

In Canada, 6-8% of children have a food allergy. Having a life threatening food allergy can encompass all parts of everyday life. Children with food allergy live with the chance of having a severe allergic reaction if they are not careful. Reading food labels, deciding what is safe to eat and carrying an epinephrine auto-injector are regular occurrences for children and teens living with food allergy.

Older children and teens need the right information, good decision making skills and support to manage their food allergy every day. Parents work hard to help their children to learn these tasks and take responsibility. As children get older and are more independent they need to navigate many situations on their own. With this in mind, the Children's Allergy & Asthma Education Centre (CAAEC) at the Children's Hospital in Winnipeg has developed food allergy education programs and resources to help parents, school age children and teens to better manage their food allergy. Support from the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba (www.goodbear.ca) was instrumental in creating these programs.

The CAAEC partnered with AllerGen and Food Allergy Canada (www.foodallergycanada.ca) and a local multimedia company Tactica Interactive to develop a food allergy app for youth. The Kung Food App is now available in the Google Play and App store. This free app is aimed to improve knowledge and skills for youth living with food allergies. Kung Food was developed by nurse educators, allergists and with input from youth with food allergy. Users will test their Food Allergy I.Q. as they navigate through different food allergy scenarios to challenge their decision making skills. Scenario examples include being bullied, eating in restaurants, going out with friends, managing stress and managing an allergic reaction.

Another feature within the app allows the user to personalize an Allergy Alert message to friends or family with information about their food allergy, emergency contact as well as links for more food allergy information.
