Fabulous reasons to fly local! Hidden gem for kids located near the airport
The Western Canada Aviation Museum is tucked away in the airport area (if you follow the signs from Ellice and Ferry Road, they will guide you straight to the door) and is well worth the effort to find - and find often. A six-pack on reasons to fly local and check out the aviation museum with children in tow!
- Blast from the past: The entrance is located in the original airport terminal where all passenger flights from Winnipeg originated some 50 years ago. The hangar is full with interesting tales of aircraft and pilots, but for children, the pay-off is the upstairs trip through the newly renovated Skyways interactive play area.
- Skyways: Children pass through a 'security station' complete with bells and whistles and of course, a counter with a tray filled with 'stuff' that goes through the 'scanner'. A 4-seater plane with a complete cockpit, a wind tunnel and 'lift' machine keep kids occupied and learning. The area is quiet and brightly lit, relaxing for moms and dads while the little ones explore.
- Endless action: An observation lounge with comfortable seating allows visitors to watch the airport traffic come and go, complete with comments from ground control. And the activity goes on daily, rain or shine, sleet or snow!
- Al Simmons: Local entertainer Al Simmons has created a custom performance called "By the Seat of their Pants" which is a humourous look at pioneer bush pilots. Aimed at children age 5 to adult, the 45-minute show will play for two days only - a kick off to the spring break week - on Saturday March 27 and Sunday 28 at 3:00 pm. Tickets are available online at our Web site for only $10 per guest. A fabulous afternoon combined with a Skyways visit.
- Stroller friendly Hangar Hike: If your toddlers are not quite yet toddling, the museum features a 90,000 square foot hangar with clearly marked 'trails'. In fact on Mondays, from 10:00 to 11:30 the music is on, the coffee is perking and the sneakers and strollers are moving. With convenient parking only steps from the front entrance, it's a stroller friendly environment and five 'laps' equal a kilometer. Join other moms for a Monday stroll!
- Self guided Scavenger Hunt - For the slightly older children (5 - to adult), ask for a scavenger hunt when you check for your visit. They'll provide you with a pictorial scavenger hunt, clip boards and pencils. A do-it-yourself activity with fun, flight and fitness in mind.
An annual family membership to the museum is only $50 and allows members unlimited visits to play, walk, laugh, pretend and still be home for supper! For more information on casual admission rates, programs and events, call 786-5503 or visit our Web site.
