Dr. Jay Buenafe brings Painless 30 Second Circumcision to Winnipeg

The pendulum has swung back and forth over the decades in regards to recommendations on circumcisions. In recent years more and more well-researched scientific studies continue to show additional medical benefits of circumcisions. Some benefits of circumcision include a reduced risk of urinary tract infection and penile infection (also referred to as balanoposthitis), 60% reduction in AIDS transmission and a 30% reduction in herpes and human papilloma virus transmission which causes venereal warts, cancer of the cervix and cancer of the penis. Infant circumcision also eliminates the risk of developing Phimosis or Balanitis later in life, improves hygiene; more importantly in elderly males. The newest evidence now shows a possible link between circumcision and a reduced risk of prostate cancer, sexual dysfunction and vaginal infection in partners of circumcised men.

In light of these studies and the publics' growing awareness of the value of circumcision as it pertains to medical benefits and reduced risk of diseases, some of which are potentially deadly like Aids, many physicians have noted a significant spike in the demand for infant circumcision.

Given the current situation, one local physician, Dr. Buenafe decided to focus on providing the most advanced and safest form of circumcision he could find. After conducting extensive research of the various surgical approaches and anaesthetic (pain control) protocols available today, he found one physician in Canada who had dedicated most of his professional career to focus on finding and researching what he considers the quickest and safest circumcision with the highest degree of attention to pain control for infants . He contacted that doctor and decided to study his methods carefully and bring it to Manitoba. The technique and methodology is called the "Pollock Technique" developed by Dr. Neil Pollock in Vancouver who has demonstrated the safety of this method and has come as close to anyone in perfecting a virtually painless 30-second technique over the course of him doing 35,000 circumcisions over 20 years. Dr. Buenafe went to Vancouver and worked intensively with Dr. Pollock under his careful supervision. During this training Dr. Buenafe first worked on performing hundreds of surgeries on models and then graduating to working on patients. Through this training he has brought this 30-second, virtually painless technique to Manitoba.

Dr. Pollock has taught numerous physicians in his technique including most recently his travels to Africa where circumcision is being offered on mass both to infants and adults because of its profound scientifically proven way to reduce AIDS transmission by 60%; potentially saving thousands to even millions of lives in Africa. Dr. Pollock taught his technique in Rwanda where prior to him arriving the locals were using scissors and stitches and taking 20-minutes to do the surgery. During Dr. Pollocks work in Rwanda he taught them his technique, successfully teaching the 30-seconds, virtually painless, no stitches approach and is the accepted technique of practice in Rwanda across the country. Dr. Pollock continues to set plans for other countries in Africa to help through training in this proven and beneficial technique.

Opponents of circumcision question the issues regarding the child's rights because the infant cannot make an informed decision himself while the parents act in the child's best interest. Opponents of circumcision have also tried to link this to female circumcision which has no similarity other than the word "circumcision" because female circumcision is an illegal procedure, mutilating the female genitals of women with no medical benefits whatsoever and is still practiced in some third world countries as opposed to circumcision which is a legal procedure carried out safely by thousands of medical practitioners and specialists across North America with multiple documented medical benefits, some of which are life-saving. The position of the Canadian Paediatric Society remains that the parents should be given unbiased information regarding the medical benefits and the risks so they can make an informed decision about what they believe is best for their child regarding circumcision. Their position is to be reevaluated and may change pending their review of all the most recent studies that have demonstrated multiple increased benefits for circumcision that stand from infancy to old age.

Dr. Jay Buenafe is a well-known and respected physician in Manitoba with over 7 years of practice in Family Medicine. As part of his practise focuses on infant circumcision, he has studied and trained with Dr. Neil Pollock, a pioneer and foremost authority in North America on the Pollock Technique.

Alternate techniques of circumcision range and can last from 15 to 20 minutes. Dr. Buenafe uses a multistep pain protocol that includes Tylenol, freezing cream, a local aesthetic injection, sugar ball pacifiers (which have shown to reduce pain perceptions), padded baby trays, soft music and heated baby rooms. All of which Dr. Buenafe states have removed the whole stigma of this being in any way "barbaric" which used to be the old complaint regarding circumcision and now most patients can sleep through the entire procedure.

Dr. Buenafe is now offering this technique to patients in the Winnipeg area. He can be reached at (204) 697-9013 or visit Dr. Buenafe's website at for more information.
