"Slow Down you move to fast you got to make the morning last .." as the lyrics go to the classic Simon and Garfunkel song "Feeling Groovy". It's that time of year to slow down and unstructure our lives even if it's just on weekends. School is almost out, the kid's activities are winding down and we are all looking forward to the lazy days of summer.
Are you a camping family, a cottage family, a head to the beach family or a hang out in the backyard family? Whichever you are, the goal is the same. Relax and spend quality time together. Summer is the perfect time to reconnect as a family. During the school year, everyone is busy with work, after school and weekend activities and homework that it can be hard to find be together.
But summer .that is the time to make a conscious effort to be together. Try to find activities that offer a lot of laughter, discussion and joy. It might be playing at the park, hanging out on the dock at the cottage, camping in the backyard, going to Manitoba fair or festival. More than anything else, spending time with your children is the greatest gift you can give them! Money does not have to be an issue for summer family fun. There are so many free or almost free activities that everyone, regardless of income level can participate in. Check out our suggestions in this issue in our Top Ten article as well as in the Family Fun Calendar.
Don't forget that Father's Day is June 15th. Help the kids plan a great day for dad! Try to come up with a unique idea to make the day extra special. There are some great websites to help you with this.Check out the Father's Day article in this issue for some great ideas.
I would also like to remind you to think SAFETY all summer long. Did you know that most accidents that cause children injuries and death are preventable? Falls are the number one cause of injury in children. Try to supervise your children at the park, in the backyard and teach them to play cautiously and carefully. Teach them to identify dangerous activities and how they can be hurt by trying things that they should not be doing, even if their friends are doing it. Make sure your children are wearing protective gear when cycling, rollerblading, skateboarding or using a scooter. Read the article about backyard trampolines in this issue. If you buy one, there is a good chance that you are setting your children up for injury. Always supervise your children at the beach or pool and make sure they know how to swim.
Have a safe, family fun-filled June and July!
Susan
