June and July are two of my favorite months of the year. May was not the dream beginning to summer that we all wish for. I can't recall such a wet month in quite a long time. At least everything is so green and lush! Now we need some heat to put smiles on everyone's faces.
Winnipeg Parent hosted our 4th wonderful Family Fun and Learning Fair on Sunday, April 29th and what a great day it was! The weather was sunny and warm and attendance was well over 1600 moms, dads, caregivers and kids. We had over 30 exhibitors that offered wonderful information on education, health, recreation, family fun and more, great entertainment, lots of kids activities and more. The Assiniboine Park Conservatory was a great venue, albeit a little squishy for those SUV's!
"SUVs indoors" you ask? I am talking about those giant "stroller utility vehicles" that are all the rage these days. You don't realize how large they are until 2 of them try to pass each other in an aisle. Talk about luxury on wheels for kids!
I want to thank all the exhibitors and everyone who attended the Fun Fair. It was the best ever and will be hard to top next year! Check out page 13 for pictures of the event.
Let's try to slow down this summer. Take the time to smell the flowers, listen to the birds in the morning, walk, rollerblade, play, laugh and enjoy quality time with our children. Try to think back to when you were a child and enjoy summer activities now as you did then. When you set up the sprinkler for you kids, surprise them by running through it too! Really listen to your kids laugh and laugh out loud along with them. You will feel great! How about making a hopscotch game on the sidewalk and teaching your kids to play? Jump rope, throw a Frisbee, play at the playground or pitch a tent in the backyard. Just because you are 25, 35 or 45, doesn't mean you can't play like you were 5 or 10.
Summer can be a dangerous time when hospital emergencies fill up with kids with broken limbs, knocked out teeth or cuts requiring stitches. Kids need strict rules and boundries when playing outside. Make sure your backyard is a safe play area. Ensure your children wear protective gear to ride bikes, rollerblade, scooter or skateboard.
Please-.Please DO NOT buy a back yard trampoline-unless you want your kids and their friends smashing into each other, knocking out teeth or at worst, breaking a neck.
I am not kidding! Remember to teach your kids to play safe and set an example yourself.
This issue we provide enough activities and events to fill up each day this summer. Our city and province offers so much to do for families and kids: festivals, museums, concerts, camps, programs, free stuff and more. Get out there and enjoy being a tourist in your own city and province!
Have a safe and fun filled June and July!
