Focus on Education 2010
Next to unconditional parental love and quality family time, your child must have a well balanced education to be successful in today's challenging world. Even at the pre-school level, parents are shopping for programs that best suit the needs of their children. Many parents are looking outside the public school system in search of smaller classrooms, language immersion, religious and cultural training, greater discipline, experienced, enthusiastic motivating, teachers and a variety of extracurricular activities. Public school systems are realizing that to keep their students and attract new ones, they too must offer specialized programs. Ensuring that your child's school experience is a positive one starting from the pre-school years should be every parent's priority!
Here are some suggestions to consider when school shopping:
- How many children in a classroom?
- Is there an active parent council?
- Is the environment clean, safe and well maintained?
- Does the staff (principal, teachers and office staff seem friendly and helpful?
- Are the halls filled with the works of the students?
- Do the teachers speak to the children respectfully?
- How are children disciplined for unacceptable behaviour?
- Is the library busy and well stocked?
- Do you see parents volunteering in the classrooms?
- Is there a modern computer and science lab?
- Are there a variety of extracurricular clubs and sports programs?
Be assertive and detail your child's personality when you go to an interview. Write down all the answers given so that you can go home and compare notes.

South Winnipeg Kindershule
In the basement of a Crescentwood Church lays a secret. To most observers it is a regular pre-school: a white board, small tables and chairs, games, play kitchen and all the other telling signs. Walk through the door and there is a wonderful and unexpected surprise. The language the kids are learning in is German. Kids with varying degrees of knowledge in the language (extensive to none at all) are learning vocabulary, songs and culture. Since it first opened its doors 20 years ago scores of parents with German background have opted for making Kinderschule the first building block in their child's education. The school's programs focus on the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of the child, while encouraging German language skills. Still, the underlying wish is that the children have fun while they learn.
"My daughter enjoys the crafts and the new songs she learns. She is so proud after class and shows us what she has accomplished. As a parent I can see how much she has grown in so short a time" adds one parent whose child attends the 3 and 4 year old program.
The school runs classes for three to five-year-olds on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays with integrated German instruction. The school has also just started a Tuesday morning drop-in playgroup. "The playgroup is for children ages 1-3 with an attending caregiver," says Heather Scublics the former director of the school and one of the originators of this playgroup. "This gives parents (or grandparents) an early opportunity to learn and speak German alongside their children, and to become part of a community that cares about language. It's a great way to get started in Kinderschule."
South Winnipeg Kinderschule is located at 1118 Grosvenor Ave. (in St. George's Church). For more info ph. 231-8028 or visit our Web site.

The three day/week program for 4 year olds runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings or afternoons at a cost of $112/month. Morning class times are from 8:50 am to 11:20 am and our afternoon class times are from 12:45 pm to 3:15 pm. Our programs run from September to June. Please note that subsidies are available.

English-Ukrainian Bilingual Programs
A Second Language - Learn More Than Just Words!
The parents of children enrolled in the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program see first-hand what research has consistently shown: that learning a second language improves literacy and learning in general. The skills used in reading and writing processes are transferable from first to second language and vice versa, which allows learners to have a wider command of vocabulary in both languages. It improves mental flexibility and creativity, and strengthens communication skills, listening and memory. The benefits of learning a second language extend far beyond merely knowing the language itself. Overall, it helps your child's brain be its best!
In addition to the immeasurable benefits of learning the language, the English-Ukrainian Biingual Program allows students to gain a rich understanding of Ukrainian culture, traditions and heritage. Parents have found the program has helped their children to grow and stretch in myriad ways. Many of the children show a high level of enthusiasm about their school program, and this energy is reflected in everything they do, including non-academic, extracurricular activities. Children also learn French as part of the curriculum, further extending the benefits of multi-language instruction.
The English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program is offered through 12 public schools in Winnipeg, Oakbank, Selkirk, and Dauphin. There is no cost to enroll, and there is busing available to program schools within the division based on divisional guidelines. Families do not need to be of Ukrainian descent, or speak Ukrainian at home. Contact Manitoba Parents for Ukrainian Education (MPUE) at 204-942-5405 or visit our Web site.

St. Boniface Diocesan High School
St. Boniface Diocesan High School is an English Catholic High School located in the heart of St. Boniface. This co-educational school takes pride in keeping a focus on its students' faith and development as people. The St. B community identifies every student's unique talents and helps students grow into compassionate, responsible and educated young adults.
As a Gr. 12 student currently attending St. B I have experienced firsthand the meaning behind our school motto "Small enough to care, Big enough to make a difference". The St. B community may be small, averaging around 220 students from Grades 9-12, but we are like family. It is a wonderful feeling being able to walk down the hallways and know everyone's names. The small class sizes mean that students have more one-on-one contact with teachers. Our close-knit community has been a fantastic atmosphere for me to learn and to grow in throughout my high school years.
A major aspect that sets St. B apart from other schools is our strong sense of faith. We gather for masses throughout the school year, coming together as a school community to celebrate. Every year a school theme focuses on developing students' character and virtues. This year our theme is "St. B-Attitudes".
Although St. B is a small school, many opportunities exist for students involvement. We have sports teams, intramurals, dance classes, debate teams, international trips, class retreats, groups like Youth Ministry and Student Government.
One of the biggest and best opportunities I experienced at St. B. was carrying the Olympic flame as it passed through Manitoba on its way to the 2010 Olympics. Altogether, 12 students from St. B were chosen to carry the flame. We wouldn't have had this opportunity without the direction of a dedicated St. B staff, who is always providing students with opportunities.
I am proud to have attended St. Boniface Diocesan High School and am confident that this school has provided me with the tools I need to go out and face the world successfully. I cannot imagine receiving a better education.

Jobworks: An Alternative High School that works
Some teens exit traditional schools because of bad behavior or poor attendance, others never really catch on to basic skills, lose interest in learning, feel invisible or like aliens on a strange planet. They are considered at-risk youth, teenagers who have not had success in traditional schools. However, there is another avenue available to them. Jobworks Adult Learning Centre offers an alternative high school program that individualizes academic plans for students who are 16 to 18 years old and have successfully completed Grade 8. "There are always some who fall through the cracks in mainstream schools," says Al Hrytsak, Jobworks Director. "Our program gives those students a chance to be successful."
The private, not-for-profit school receives funding from the Provincial government and follows Manitoba curriculum. Students attain provincial credits for all the mandatory subjects as well as option classes in Art, Woodworking, and even Career Development. However, maximum enrollment is just 40 students and courses are slotted into streamlined nine week modules. "Their light at the end of the tunnel is only 9-weeks away," explains Hrytsak. In other schools it takes at least 5 months to complete a course. At Jobworks, students focus on completing one core subject and one elective during each module, which Hrytsak says has been effective. "In a lot of them, their confidence and self-esteem grows." Last year alone, almost every student in the graduating stream received a Grade 12 diploma. For more information, contact Jobworks Adult Learning Centre at 453-8351.

Partners for Learning
Partners for Learning is owned and operated by Louise Carson, a certified reading clinician, who has over 30 years of experience working with both students and educators. Students are assessed by Louise who then designs and supervises each remedial program. A student works individually with one of the teachers on staff, each having an area of teaching specialty.
Tutoring takes place Mondays through Thursdays after school, as well as on Saturdays during the school year. Summer tutoring is very popular as this is the only time when a student with problems can narrow the gap while the rest of the class isn't actively learning. Tutoring is available during July and August. As well, there are numerous options for small groups and clinics during August which focus on reading, writing, spelling, math and study skills. For further information call 475-2199.
Oxford Learning
Founded in 1984 in London, ON, Oxford Learning uses a unique tutoring system to help Canadian children get better grades.
"One of the major things that sets us apart from other tutors is that our teaching system is more than simple memorization - it teaches students about how to learn. We also focus on skills such as organization and study habits alongside math and reading, which means that over time, students really see results," says Alexis Yildir, Centre Director of Oxford Learning Winnipeg.
From pre-school to university prep, Oxford Learning offers programs for students of every age, grade, and learning need. An academic assessment identifies a student's learning strengths and weaknesses. From there, students are given an individualized program that helps them develop in the areas that they need the most support: from reading and math, to paying attention, and homework support. Regular progress reports keep parents up-to-date.
Students not only improve their academics in a variety of subjects, they develop confidence in their abilities, which unlocks their potential."Once students are confident in their abilities, they can accomplish anything," says Alexis.

Association of Independent Tutors
Is your child floundering at school?
Most parents want their children to succeed but when they try to help them, often they find that their children are not receptive to their help. Sometimes students can help each other but even when peer tutors know the material, they rarely have the skills to helps students who are struggling to understand. Tutors with professional training, classroom experience, and the desire to build confidence and positive self-esteem will tailor their instruction to the needs of each individual student so that you will see positive changes. The teachers who have been chosen to be a part of the Association of Independent Tutors are dedicated professionals with the skills and the patience to work with academically delayed students, students with problems in specific areas, and good students who want to be great students. We focus primarily on public school aged children (kindergarten to grade 12) but we also work with adults who want to upgrade their skills, as well as those who are learning English. Sometimes college and university students come to us for help with lower level courses or with writing assignments. For more information or to be matched with a tutor, call Marty (secondary) at 226-3437 or Caroline (elementary) at 255-4251.
