We've made it through January. The month that most of us want to go as quickly as possible so we can be that much closer to spring.
January was a sad month for my family as we started 2008 with our wonderful dog, Kelly passing away very suddenly from a stomach tumor that we had no idea was there until it was too late. She would have been 13 years old in January and was never sick for even one day her whole life. We chose her from the Winnipeg Humane Society as a puppy when she was just 7 weeks old, one of a litter of 8 puppies. It was April, 1985 and I decided that if I wasn't going to have a 3rd child, our family needed a dog. My sons were 7 and 4 at the time and were ready to help care for a dog and my husband, who had never had a pet had no idea that a puppy was coming into his life. He was out of town when I brought Kelly home and I knew he would love this adorable little puppy that came running to meet him when he walked in the door.
We all fell in love with her immediately. She was a great dog! A very smart border collie cross who loved to chase squirrels and rabbits and be our protector from anyone who came to the door. She could hear someone coming up the walk long before they reached the door. We walked the neighbourhood almost daily and we loved our walks together. Even as she got older, she could still walk for an hour. We marveled at her endurance and energy!
We knew our puppy would not be with us forever and we are thankful for her long and healthy life but... when you lose a pet overnight without warning, it is such a shock. Our home is so quiet without her and everywhere I look, I am reminded of her and the years she shared with us. She gave us so much and asked for so little in return. We are comforted by all the pictures and wonderful memories that we will have forever! We love you Kelly!
This issue marks the beginning of Winnipeg Parent's 15th anniversary year! Time really does fly when your having fun! I am amazed that a little idea I had more than 15 years ago has grown to the publication it its today.
We hope you enjoy this issue of Winnipeg Parent. It is our annual Focus on Education issue, which highlights the many educational options available in our city. You can read about preschools to high schools, as well as supplemental programs for kids of all ages.
February is "I Love to Read" month and there are many events taking place at The Children's Museum throughout February. Check out the Family Fun calendar for many other family events taking place too.
Have a Fabulous February and enjoy the bonus day this year...it's a leap year!
