Focus on Education 2008
Next to unconditional parental love and quality family time, your child must have a well balanced education to be successful in today's challenging world. Even at the pre-school level, parents are shopping for programs that best suit the needs of their children. Many parents are looking outside the public school system in search of smaller classrooms, language immersion, religious and cultural training, greater discipline, experienced, enthusiastic motivating, teachers and a variety of extracurricular activities. Public school systems are realizing that to keep their students and attract new ones, they too must offer specialized programs. Ensuring that your child's school experience is a positive one starting from the pre-school years should be every parent's priority!
Here are some suggestions to consider when school shopping:
- How many children in a classroom?
- Is there an active parent council?
- Is the environment clean, safe and well maintained?
- Does the staff (principal, teachers and office staff seem friendly and helpful?
- Are the halls filled with the works of the students?
- Do the teachers speak to the children respectfully?
- How are children disciplined for unacceptable behaviour?
- Is the library busy and well stocked?
- Do you see parents volunteering in the classrooms?
- Is there a modern computer and science lab?
- Are there a variety of extracurricular clubs and sports programs?
Be assertive and detail your child's personality when you go to an interview. Write down all the answers given so that you can go home and compare notes.

Winnipeg Montessori School Inc.
Winnipeg Montessori School Inc has been promoting the love of learning for almost 40 years and remains one of the city's oldest and most respected Montessori schools. Their program is designed to create an ideal environment to further enhance a child's natural, social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.
The philosophy and method of Montessori education was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori who believed that no human being is educated by another person. According to Dr. Montessori, "He or she must do it himself or herself or it will never get done." Keeping in line with this method of teaching, it is believed that the goal of early childhood education should not be to fill the child with facts from a pre-selected course of studies, but to cultivate each child's own natural desire to learn.
The warm and friendly staff at Winnipeg Montessori School Inc., nurture this desire of learning and are committed to fostering the progression of children at their own level while emphasizing self motivated learning, choice-making, and respect for self and others. Also offered within this program is a weekly music class which introduces the children to the exciting world of music through singing, rhythm, movement and listening activities. Their primary goal is to provide an opportunity for children to gain independence and self-confidence.
The school's permanent home is located at 1525 Willson Place, off Waverley Street and boasts 4800 square feet of learning area. As sole occupants, this purpose built school offers open classrooms, which are abundant with appropriate Montessori education materials and equipment. A large indoor gym allows for daily gross motor activities and creative movement. The outdoor playground further enhances this ideal learning environment for pre-school aged children.
With morning or afternoon programs offered 2,3 or 5 half days including a half-day Kindergarten program, Winnipeg Montessori School offers a wonderful learning opportunity for children between the ages 2 1/2 - 6 years. "Kinderschule Taps German Language Niche"
Tucked away in a corner of a River Heights Anglican church you wouldn't expect to find one of our city's most venerable childrens' schools. Upon entering its front doors you find a bustling pre-school that on the surface looks like any other - the difference here is the kids are all learning to speak German.
Since it first opened its doors 20 years ago scores of parents with German background have opted for making Kinderschule the first building block in their child's education.
The school's director says they work hard to create an inviting and creative atmosphere.
"Not only do the children enjoy their time at Kinderschule, they feel ownership in it," says Heather Scublics.
"They have individual cubbies (lockers) that welcome them by name at the entrance, they play, sing, laugh, create, listen and, most importantly they learn. The only problem, in some cases, is convincing them it's time to go home."
The school runs classes for three to five-year-olds on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays with integrated German instruction.
The school has also just started a Tuesday morning drop-in playgroup. "The playgroup is for children ages 1-3 with an attending caregiver," say Scublics.
"This gives parents (or grandparents) an early opportunity to learn and speak German alongside their children, and to become part of a community that cares about language. It's a great way to get started in Kinderschule."
South Winnipeg Kinderschule is located at 1118 Grosvenor Ave. (in St. George's Church). For more info ph. 231-8028 or visit our Web site* (* Will open in a new window.)

In this safe and non-competitive atmosphere, they acquire self-respect,independence and a positive attitude to learning. St. John's Ravenscourt
Open Minds - Open Doors
SJR reflects the success of co-educational learning in an environment of excellence.
Building on its impressive 187-year history, St. John's-Ravenscourt School provides students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 with exceptional academic and co-curricular programs in a fully co-educational environment.
"We feel the whole program at SJR is vital to what we define as the success of our students - a program that teaches them to take action in the world by exposing them to leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, creative expression, compassion, and mutual respect," says Dr. Stephen Johnson, SJR's Head of School. "For knowledge to become wisdom, we must offer a full growth experience."
"We're building upon children's natural curiosity, desire to learn and unique learning styles. We encourage active exploration, experimentation, inquiry and discovery," says Junior School Principal Cheryl Chaban.
"In Middle School, teachers are attuned to the unique needs of young adolescents - particularly important in the transition between the junior and senior grades," says Middle School Principal Doug Palm.
SJR's faculty and staff guide the development of social, emotional, physical and academic skills, as well as promoting independence, decision-making abilities and a positive self-concept. Emphasis is also placed on the reinforcement of community values, including respect and understanding others - instilled from the earliest grades.
While the environment was much different when Senior School Principal Nancy Gillies (SJR Class of '76) attended SJR, she acknowledges that graduating with a strong sense of direction and an appreciation for the skills that her teachers helped develop are both qualities evident in today's students.
"We've changed from being a boys' school with girls in the early 70s, to becoming a fully co-educational environment in every way; students, faculty and leadership all work together to create a truly positive climate of learning," says Ms. Gillies. "Being part of a community that thrives on challenge and is serious about learning makes all the difference. Our students feel a tremendous sense of connection to the School that grows and flourishes as they move through the grades."
For more information about our School and Financial Aid programs, please contact Ms. Jane Baizley, Director of Admissions, at (204) 477-2400 or via E-mail.

First and foremost, the school offers the Religious Education program endorsed by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. The school community recognizes all liturgical seasons in prayerful ways and the senior students participate in the volunteer food bank service in support of Holy Cross Parish.
Holy Cross School is located at 300 Dubuc Street, just 5 minutes from the downtown area. Families are invited to attend the annual Open House on Tuesday, February 5th at 6:30 p.m. To receive further information about the school or to make an appointment with our Principal, John Talaga, call 237-4936.
St. Boniface Diocesan High School
A Student's Perspective - Alycia Praznik, Grade 11:
Hello, my name is Alycia Praznik, and I am currently a grade 11 student at St. Boniface Diocesan High School, better known as St. B.
St. B is a co-educational, English speaking high school, located in a quiet residential area in St. Boniface. The school offers a variety of compulsory and optional courses, allowing students to choose courses that interest them. St. B. has small class sizes which help students and staff interact and build caring relationships.
St. B offers an abundance of extra-curricular activities which aid in the spiritual, physical, and social development of the students. Personally, I am a member of Youth Ministry which organizes fundraisers and activities to raise money for various charities. I am also on a committee that is designing, organizing and promoting school spirit wear for students and staff. I am part of the cast for EASTAR, which is an original music production written and directed by our band teacher, Mr. Coughlin. Other extra-curricular activities offered at St. B include Varsity and Junior Varsity sports teams, Intramurals, choir, the Green Unit (environmental group), to name only a few. I would also like to mention our Student Government which functions and is modeled after the Canadian Parliamentary system of Government.
Our Student Government holds annual events such as St. B day and a "Welcome Back" barbeque in the fall which helps to build school community while encouraging fun-filled activities. An example of Student Government organized activities includes dress-up days such as "Superhero Day" and "Twin/Triplet Day", to encourage friendly competition between Teacher Advisory Groups.
So if you are looking for a solid educational opportunity, and a place to grow spiritually, academically, socially, and physically, check out St. Boniface Diocesan High School..."Small Enough to Care, Big Enough to Make a Difference!"

Gray Academy of Jewish Education
The mission of Gray Academy is to graduate informed and educated Jewish men and women comfortable with all of the various expressions of Jewish Life, enabling and inspiring them to become creative participants in the Jewish community and empowered members of Canadian society.
Each student is encouraged and supported in achieving his or her maximum potential, not only as a successful scholar, but also as an active and productive member of the community. Gray Academy of Jewish Education offers an accelerated program of studies which begin with preparatory programs in Junior Kindergarten and full-day Kindergarten. In Grades 1 to 6, students' time is divided between general studies and Judaic studies. From Grades 7 through 12, students can choose the regular accelerated program or the advanced placement program, the latter culminating in a final year comprised of university credit courses.
Gray Academy provides a rigorous curriculum, but one in which students excel, thanks to a nurturing environment in which committed teachers dedicate themselves to motivate and inspire their students. Our school is very much like a family in which older students serve as role models and mentors to younger children. Even parents and grandparents participate as volunteers and as Parent Advisory Committee and Board members.
Jobworks: An Alternative High School that works
Some teens exit traditional schools because of bad behavior or poor attendance, others never really catch on to basic skills, lose interest in learning, feel invisible or like aliens on a strange planet. They are considered at-risk youth, teenagers who have not had success in traditional schools. However, there is another avenue available to them. Jobworks Adult Learning Centre offers an alternative high school program that individualizes academic plans for students who are 16 to 18 years old and have successfully completed Grade 8. "There are always some who fall through the cracks in mainstream schools," says Al Hrytsak, Jobworks Director. "Our program gives those students a chance to be successful."
The private, not-for-profit school receives funding from the Provincial government and follows Manitoba curriculum. Students attain provincial credits for all the mandatory subjects as well as option classes in Art, Woodworking, and even Career Development. However, maximum enrollment is just 40 students and courses are slotted into streamlined nine week modules. "Their light at the end of the tunnel is only 9-weeks away," explains Hrytsak. In other schools it takes at least 5 months to complete a course. At Jobworks, students focus on completing one core subject and one elective during each module, which Hrytsak says has been effective. "In a lot of them, their confidence and self-esteem grows." Last year alone, almost every student in the graduating stream received a Grade 12 diploma. For more information, contact Jobworks Adult Learning Centre at 453-8351.

The skill of paying attention can be learned and improved as easily as learning how to ride a bike with the right feedback. Research shows NF is effective in resolving the symptoms of ADD/ADHD and Epilepsy. NF has demonstrated results with autism, Asperger's syndrome, learning deficits, teeth grinding, bed wetting, tension and migraine headaches, anxiety, stress, etc. The skill of managing one's mind once learned is retained for life. Partners for Learning
Partners for Learning is owned and operated by Louise Carson, B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed.,a certified reading clinician, who has over 30 years of experience working with both students and educators. Students are assessed by Louise who then designs and supervises each remedial program. A student works individually with one of the 30 teachers on staff, each having an area of teaching specialty.
Tutoring takes place Mondays through Thursdays after school, as well as on Saturdays during the school year. Summer tutoring is very popular as this is the only time when a student with problems can narrow the gap while the rest of the class isn't actively learning. Tutoring is available during July and August. As well, there are numerous options for small groups and clinics during August which focus on reading, writing, spelling, math and study skills. For further information call 475-2199.
Spirit of Math Schools
Spirit of Math Schools believe that most children need and want to be challenged. And the overwhelming success of Toronto's SMS campus confirms this belief. Each year 90% of their student body is made up of students who return to the challenging and invigorating atmosphere of the Spirit of Math classroom.
The materials used at Spirit of Math Schools were developed in public school classrooms over a 20 year period by Mr. Charles Ledger. Mr. Ledger strove to develop a system of mathematical inquiry that has evolved into one of the most effective and stimulating math programs in North America.
Each week the Grades four/five class eagerly calculates the class average from their weekly drills hoping to beat their score from the previous week. Kids work together to reach a solution to different types of problems, and in the process, learn to communicate mathematically. The children in Grades two and three beam with pride as they remember how the division, that is "so easy" now, was scary and unknown just a few classes ago.
Spirit of Math Schools will be hosting "Bring a Friend" nights. Parents are invited to attend with their children to take part in the classes that week. To register, please call Mrs. Valerie Froese at 772-MATH (6284)

Webster's Academy: Writing from a Checklist
Webster's Academy teaches children a check system that allows them to move easily from 1) gathering information into a key word outline to 2) writing a simple paragraph and finally on to 3) "dressing it up".
The key word outline provides a concrete model that students in grades 4 through 12 quickly learn to use. Once the outline is complete a paragraph can easily be written.
Read this simple paragraph written from a key word outline:
The loon is a master singer. Loons hoot to keep track of other loons. They wail to attract a mate. A yodel is used when others cross their territory. A high pitched song warns other loons of danger. Loons are most vocal at night when they sing in answer to other loons.
Once the first draft is complete, Webster's checklist enables children to make effective improvements. The loon is a master singer. Hooting helps loons easily keep track of other loons. Earnestly they wail to attract a mate. When others cross their territory, they yodel a song which is unique to each loon. A high pitched song warns of danger. During the night, loons are most vocal because they sing in response to other loons. The many voices of the loon truly make him a master singer.
