YES! We have made it over the winter hump month and now it's on to spring. February can go either way weather wise in but usually the weather gods smile on the best winter party in Winnipeg, the Festival du Voyageur. Visit St. Boniface February 9th to18th, to enjoy the snow sculptures, entertainment, outdoor and indoor activities and much more. Get outside this month to celebrate a Winnipeg winter at it's best! You can toboggan, snowshoe, skate, snowboard, cross-country ski or just take a walk in the park or your neighbourhood.
February is I Love to Read Month and there will be activities at schools, the Children's Museum and local library branches to celebrate. Reading and storytelling should be a daily activity in your family and it is a great month to read a book as a family. Storytelling is a way to preserve family memories. Whether it's a story about daily events in each family members life or a story from the past, try encouraging your children to tell a story over dinner. Being able to communicate a story clearly is an important asset in life. Kids love to hear parents and grandparents tell stories from their childhood.
This month, we present our annual Focus on Education issue. It is a chance for you to research the many educational options your children have in Winnipeg. Ensuring your preschooler gets a good start by attending a preschool that suits their needs is very important. Once you read about the many preschool, elementary and high school options, you should try to attend open houses or set up a meeting with the principal or headmaster during school hours. When you visit the school think about these things: are the halls quiet or noisy? Is there a sense of discipline? Is art and schoolwork proudly displayed in the hallways? Do the teachers seem to be engaging the students in learning? Are the washrooms well maintained? You can tell a lot about a school by visiting it in the middle of the day.
There are many great things going on in our city for families this month. The Manitoba Museum and the Children's Museum have new galleries opening. You can snow golf at Oak Hammock Marsh and snowshoe and ice fish at Ft. Whyte. Why not attend a play as a family? Both Fantasy Theatre and Manitoba Theatre for Young People offer great live shows. These are only a few suggestions. Check out our Family Fun Calendar for tons of activities and events.
Have a wonderful February!
Susan
