Focus on Education 2007
Next to unconditional parental love and quality family time, your child must have a well balanced education to be successful in today's challenging world. Even at the pre-school level, parents are shopping for programs that best suit the needs of their children. Many parents are looking outside the public school system in search of smaller classrooms, language immersion, religious and cultural training, greater discipline, experienced, enthusiastic motivating, teachers and a variety of extracurricular activities. Public school systems are realizing that to keep their students and attract new ones, they too must offer specialized programs. Ensuring that your child's school experience is a positive one starting from the pre-school years should be every parent's priority!
Here are some suggestions to consider when school shopping:
- How many children in a classroom?
- Is there an active parent council?
- Is the environment clean, safe and well maintained?
- Does the staff (principal, teachers and office staff seem friendly and helpful?
- Are the halls filled with the works of the students?
- Do the teachers speak to the children respectfully?
- How are children disciplined for unacceptable behaviour?
- Is the library busy and well stocked?
- Do you see parents volunteering in the classrooms?
- Is there a modern computer and science lab?
- Are there a variety of extracurricular clubs and sports programs?
Be assertive and detail your child's personality when you go to an interview. Write down all the answers given so that you can go home and compare notes.

Winnipeg Montessori School Inc. 07
Winnipeg Montessori School Inc has been promoting the love of learning for almost 40 years and remains one of the city's oldest and most respected Montessori schools. Their program is designed to create an ideal environment to further enhance a child's natural, social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.
The philosophy and method of Montessori education was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori who believed that no human being is educated by another person. According to Dr. Montessori, "He or she must do it himself or herself or it will never get done." Keeping in line with this method of teaching, it is believed that the goal of early childhood education should not be to fill the child with facts from a pre-selected course of studies, but to cultivate each child's own natural desire to learn.
The warm and friendly staff at Winnipeg Montessori School Inc., nurture this desire of learning and are committed to fostering the progression of children at their own level while emphasizing self motivated learning, choice-making, and respect for self and others. Also offered within this program is a weekly music class which introduces the children to the exciting world of music through singing, rhythm, movement and listening activities. Their primary goal is to provide an opportunity for children to gain independence and self-confidence.
The school's permanent home is located at 1525 Willson Place, off Waverley Street and boasts 4800 square feet of learning area. As sole occupants, this purpose built school offers open classrooms, which are abundant with appropriate Montessori education materials and equipment. A large indoor gym allows for daily gross motor activities and creative movement. The outdoor playground further enhances this ideal learning environment for pre-school aged children.

"Kinderschule Taps German Language Niche" 07
Tucked away in a corner of a River Heights Anglican church you wouldn't expect to find one of our city's most venerable childrens' schools. Upon entering its front doors you find a bustling pre-school that on the surface looks like any other - the difference here is the kids are all learning to speak German.
Since it first opened its doors 20 years ago scores of parents with German background have opted for making Kinderschule the first building block in their child's education.
The school's director says they work hard to create an inviting and creative atmosphere.
"Not only do the children enjoy their time at Kinderschule, they feel ownership in it," says Heather Scublics.
"They have individual cubbies (lockers) that welcome them by name at the entrance, they play, sing, laugh, create, listen and, most importantly they learn. The only problem, in some cases, is convincing them it's time to go home."
The school runs classes for three to five-year-olds on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays with integrated German instruction.
The school has also just started a Tuesday morning drop-in playgroup. "The playgroup is for children ages 1-3 with an attending caregiver," say Scublics.
"This gives parents (or grandparents) an early opportunity to learn and speak German alongside their children, and to become part of a community that cares about language. It's a great way to get started in Kinderschule."
South Winnipeg Kinderschule is located at 1118 Grosvenor Ave. (in St. George's Church). For more info ph. 231-8028 or visit our Web site* (* Will open in a new window.)

Beautiful Savior Lutheran School 07
The Sound of Music-And Brain Development
Can you hear the sound of a brain developing? The parents of students at Beautiful Savior Lutheran School (BSLS) are hearing the beautiful melody of cognitive growth.
As part of the elementary school's music program, principal Dr. Penny Parzyagla is providing 32 young violinists with additional benefits of music study during their formative years.
Research indicates that early string education has long-lasting effects on a child's cognitive abilities. It enhances spatial reasoning abilities, which is the area of the brain that is directly linked to mathematical and scientific reasoning. Since music and language share the same neural pathways, music has also been found to strengthen the synaptic connections and increase brain size. Therefore, musical training can impact reading, writing and speaking abilities.
The window of opportunity for the maximum impact of these benefits is before the age of 12. The BSLS violinists range in age from Grade 1 - Grade 4, and will have a public appearance at the Manitoba Federation of Independent Schools' Dinner on Feb. 8th. Now that's music to their parents' ears.
For more information on this and other programs at BSLS, call 984-9600 or e-mail us.

Educating Kids Who Care
SJR students learn the importance of community service and philanthropy as part of daily life.
A good school should give your child a quality education, emotional and social development, and physical fitness. At SJR, girls and boys also learn what they can give back - to their school, their community and beyond - at all ages and to the best of their individual abilities.
Hand in hand with SJR's commitment to quality education of the whole child is our emphasis on commitment to local and global community. From individual and classroom efforts to School-wide appeals, our students learn to incorporate philanthropy into their daily lives.
In the wake of the unprecedented devastation of the December 26 tsunami in south Asia, the SJR community is responding with great dedication. A day-long and School-wide fundraising blitz and bake sale in early January raised $8,616, which was donated to the Canadian Red Cross in time to meet the federal government's deadline for matching donations to tsunami relief efforts. In mid-January, one Grade 4 classroom undertook a "learning and leading drive" for tsunami disaster aid, educating the rest of the Junior School about tsunami and their effects and challenged them to help raise $250 or more for tsunami relief. The project's final tally brought in over $1,160. All money collected will be donated to Manitoba Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund.
"Understanding and compassion," says SJR Head of School David Howie, "are as crucial a part of a good education as language and mathematics skills. Clearly, today's Canadian students - and I'm proud to say SJR's included - have shown great personal commitment to giving in the aftermath of this disaster."
Philanthropy goes beyond emergency response, and SJR encourages student activity supporting the ongoing needs of many other local and international charitable organizations. One highlight of the Junior School's many charitable projects included the Grade 5s' "Change For Children," which raised enough funds to donate a TV, two video game units and various games to the Children's Hospital to replace a game unit stolen from the hospital last fall.
Middle School students participated in a host of volunteer outreach and fundraising activities in the community last term. Students eagerly took part in "Canning the Principal" - donating so much canned food that the Middle School Principal's office was overflowing! One Middle School Form is now organizing a collection of used black leather shoes to be sent to students in Africa for whom the wearing of shoes is a requirement to attend classes.
Senior School has been active this year in support of their fellow students, as well as the greater community. Students acted as peer mentors for the Middle School and participated in The Winnipeg Foundation's "Youth In Philanthropy" program (to name only a few initiatives). At Halloween, the Senior School "Trick or Can" food drive brought in over 900 pounds of food for Winnipeg Harvest.
We are proud of our students' development as confident, compassionate, responsible and self-disciplined citizens, as the ideals of community service learned at SJR translate into a lifelong commitment to helping and giving.

St. Boniface Diocesan High School Offers Unique Program 07
A Student's Perspective - Kelly Sheedy, Grade 12
Hello, my name is Kelly Sheedy and I am a grade 12 student at St. Boniface Diocesan High school. St. B. was established in 1965 to provide Catholic education to students of the Diocese of St. Boniface, and is operated directly under the administration of the Archbishop. St. B. is a co-ed, semestered high school beginning at the grade 9 level.
St. Boniface is different from any other high school. The teachers are able to connect well with students because of the close relationships and friendships created from being in such a small environment. Class sizes are also fairly small, allowing more one on one teaching to take place.
"I enjoy being at St. Boniface because it is really just a small community of friends, and is full of people who accept you for who you are," says Megan Paavola, a fellow Grade 12 student.
St. B. offers a variety of courses including dance, drama, band, digital film, advanced desktop publishing, to name a few. These and the mandatory courses needed for high school graduation, prepare students well for post secondary studies. I have found that as a student at St. B., I have been well prepared for what is to come in the years ahead.
There is no doubt in my mind that St. B. really is "small enough to care, big enough to make a difference!"

Gray Academy of Jewish Education was first established in 1997 when several Jewish educational institutions were brought together. The traditions of these fine schools have been renewed and energized in the vibrant heart of Winnipeg's Jewish community. The mission of Gray Academy is to provide students with the best possible education, integrating a rigorous program of general studies with the study of Jewish values, practices and teachings.
Each student is encouraged and supported in achieving his or her maximum potential, not only as a successful scholar, but also as an active and productive member of the community. Gray Academy of Jewish Education offers an accelerated program of studies which begin with preparatory programs in Junior Kindergarten and full-day Kindergarten. In grades 1 to 6, students' time is divided between general studies and Judaic studies. From grades 7 through 12, students can choose the regular accelerated program or the advanced placement program, the latter culminating in a final year comprised of university credit courses.
Gray Academy provides a rigorous curriculum, but one in which students excel, thanks to a nurturing environment in which committed teachers dedicate themselves to motivate and inspire their students. Our school is very much like a family in which older students serve as role models and mentors to younger children. Even parents and grandparents participate as volunteers and as Parent Advisory Committee and Board members.
Students enjoy an active and exciting extra-curricular life at Gray Academy and they also have access to many fine facilities at the Asper Jewish Community Campus.

The ADD Centre provides an educational approach for children and adults with attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity associated with ADD/ADHD. They learn how to focus, control their impulsive and hyperactive behaviours. Computer brainwave feedback is a proven means for people to change their brain's function in order to maintain calm and focused on task state of mind. The skill of paying attention can be learned and improved as easily as learning how to ride a bike with the right feedback. NF eliminates the need for medication. Neurofeedback (NF) is research proven to be effective in resolving the symptoms of ADD/ADHD and Epilepsy. NF has demonstrated results with autism, Asperger's syndrome, learning deficits, teeth grinding, bed wetting, tension and migraine headaches, anxiety, stress, etc. Positive changes are achieved without medication. The skill of managing one's mind once learned is retained for life. For further information contact the ADD Centre at 204-897-4493. You may also visit our Website*. (*Will open in a new window.)
Partners for Learning 07
Partners for Learning is owned and operated by Louise Carson, B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed.,a certified reading clinician, who has over 30 years of experience working with both students and educators. Students are assessed by Louise who then designs and supervises each remedial program. A student works individually with one of the 30 teachers on staff, each having an area of teaching specialty.
Tutoring takes place Mondays through Thursdays after school, as well as on Saturdays during the school year. Summer tutoring is very popular as this is the only time when a student with problems can narrow the gap while the rest of the class isn't actively learning. Tutoring is available during July and August. As well, there are numerous options for small groups and clinics during August which focus on reading, writing, spelling, math and study skills. For further information call 475-2199.
Spirit of Math Schools 07
Spirit of Math Schools believe that most children need and want to be challenged. And the overwhelming success of Toronto's SMS campus confirms this belief. Each year 90% of their student body is made up of students who return to the challenging and invigorating atmosphere of the Spirit of Math classroom.
The materials used at Spirit of Math Schools were developed in public school classrooms over a 20 year period by Mr. Charles Ledger. Mr. Ledger strove to develop a system of mathematical inquiry that has evolved into one of the most effective and stimulating math programs in North America.
Each week the Grades four/five class eagerly calculates the class average from their weekly drills hoping to beat their score from the previous week. Kids work together to reach a solution to different types of problems, and in the process, learn to communicate mathematically. The children in Grades two and three beam with pride as they remember how the division, that is "so easy" now, was scary and unknown just a few classes ago.
Spirit of Math Schools will be hosting "Bring a Friend" nights. Parents are invited to attend with their children to take part in the classes that week. To register, please call Mrs. Valerie Froese at 772-MATH (6284)
