Music for Young Children: Music Lessons for Children
Music For Young ChildrenĘ is a delightful approach to music lessons that allows children to develop musically in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The special MYC music materials involve puppets, visual aids, games and songs. In the beginning levels, the younger children become closely acquainted to a 'notable' family of keyboard and rhythm critters. For 28 years, MYC has been among the world's leading music-learning systems - the only child-centered program to integrate keyboard, creative movement, rhythm, ear training, sight-reading, music theory and composition. Children may continue in the program until they complete a Grade I level in practical piano, and a Preliminary Rudiments level in theory.
"The Music for Young Children program has to be counted as the dominant force in the musical training of young children in Canada today," says Marc Widner, Chief Examiner emeritus, Royal Conservatory Music Examinations. "Many of the new students arriving each year in my studio are graduates of MYC. They arrive superbly prepared and well motivated for further study. MYC teachers have found the right balance. They successfully blend the pleasure and joy of music making with the rigour of a well-crafted pedagogical progression."
Starting in September, children in similar age categories meet in small groups for one hour each week over a 36 week period. The group format allows for social instruction and development; it also encourages listening awareness and develops attention span. Because a parent is required to attend classes with their child, musical concepts can be reinforced at home. MYC truly becomes a family experience!
MYC was developed by Frances Balodis (B.A., M.Ed., A.R.C.T.) in 1980 to provide children with a comprehensive, exciting approach to learning music. Balodis strongly believes that learning about music helps children develop essential skills that will help them in school and elsewhere. 'Music allows children to gain a keen understanding of visual and spatial awareness, listening skills, analytical thinking, cooperation, focus and math skills,' she says. Her program being taught internationally to more than 24,000 students each year by hundreds of specially-trained private music teachers!
